Valkyries
The Valkyries is a dedicated all-girls youth wrestling team for girls ages 5–14, serving Carroll County and the surrounding communities. While many wrestling clubs offer coed practices or occasional girls' training nights, our program is built exclusively for female wrestlers. From practice to competition, our athletes train, grow, and compete alongside other girls in an environment designed to build confidence, friendships, and a lifelong love of wrestling.
Whether your daughter is stepping onto the mat for the first time or looking to compete at a higher level, our experienced coaching staff emphasizes strong wrestling fundamentals while developing confidence, discipline, resilience, and sportsmanship in a fun, safe, and encouraging atmosphere.
Our season runs from early November through early March.
Our Story
The idea for the Valkyries began with one young wrestler.
After joining the Mat Rats coed wrestling program, my daughter quickly fell in love with wrestling. As she entered second grade, she wanted to continue in the sport but also wanted the opportunity to practice and compete alongside other girls. At the time, those opportunities were few and far between, so we began traveling throughout Maryland in search of girls-only tournaments, culminating each season at the MSWA Girls Folkstyle State Championships.
Watching her excitement and confidence grow every time she competed against other girls made one thing clear—there was a need for a dedicated girls wrestling team closer to home.
That idea became the Valkyries, the first dedicated all-girls youth wrestling team in Carroll County and believed to have been Maryland's first dedicated all-girls youth wrestling team.
What began with one young wrestler has grown into a community of female wrestlers. Since our founding, the Valkyries have included participants from Carroll, Frederick, and Baltimore Counties in Maryland, as well as York County, Pennsylvania. While our team has grown in both size and level of competition, our mission remains the same: to provide every girl with the opportunity to experience wrestling in a supportive environment where she can build confidence, develop lifelong friendships, and reach her full potential.
Travel & Competition
Women's wrestling is the fastest-growing sport in the country, and opportunities for girls continue to expand every year. However, because girls' wrestling is still a developing sport, local competition remains limited. To provide our athletes with the best possible experience, the Valkyries travel throughout Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia to compete against other female wrestlers.
Every competition is completely optional. Families are free to choose tournaments based on location, availability, and their wrestler's experience and comfort level. Whether your daughter competes once during the season or attends every event, our coaching staff will help guide you toward the tournaments that best fit your goals.
Throughout the season, we seek out the best girls-only wrestling opportunities available, including local tournaments, regional events, and state championships. As girls' wrestling continues to grow, new opportunities frequently emerge, and we remain flexible in our schedule to ensure our athletes have access to the highest-quality competition possible.
Some events may require a current USA Wrestling membership or other event-specific registration. Any requirements will be communicated well in advance of the competition.
