Pete McDowell started the Junior Owls in 1979 to bring youth wrestling to the Westminster area. In 1989 the Junior owls became the organization that we know today , the Mat Rats!. Mat Rats Wrestling is a Junior League program that aims to provide children with the opportunity gain experience in the worlds oldest sport. A division of the Grindstone WC that serves youth wrestling in the greater Westminster Area. MRW strives to provide discipline, confidence, and athletic opportunities to children ages are 4-14 . The Mat Rats offer two experience levels based on ages.

USA WRESTLING CARDS: Each Mat Rat athlete and coach must have an updated USA Wrestling Card. This card gets you into tournaments, clinics, and programs all year long. You can purchase the Maryland "Folkstyle Only" card for $15 at www.usawmembership.com. You do not need to register for this card right away, more information will be provided to you at practice by your head coach.
As a local nonprofit organization the Mat Rats are always looking for coaches and volunteers. All Persons working with children must have a background check through Parks and Recreation. Please complete the Volunteer form.
Wrestlers will need
-Wrestling shoes
-Mouth Guard (Mandatory with braces)
-Headgear
-Wrestling Singlet (Due to health considerations each wrestler will need to purchase their own singlet. (The singlet must be the Mat Rats issues singlet from 2018/2019 season or newer)
Due to Covid-19 restrictions there are many changes to the Mat Rats program this year. School buildings are closed to outside organizations so practices will be help in Eldersburg, Maryland at the CHAMPIONS TRAINING CENTER. The cost for the season has increased due to the additional fees associated with renting mat space and many of the items that customarily come with the registration fee will need to be done separately. It is our goal to continue to provide wrestling to the Westminster area community and develop skills in wrestling as we develop young people!
ALL WRESTLERS WILL BE REQUIRED TO HAVE A USA WRESTLING CARD PRIOR TO THE FIRST PRACTICE. PLEASE CLICK ON THE BUTTON ABOVE TO PURCHASE YOUR USA WRESTLING CARD.
MEMBERSHIP TYPES:
$15 - Folkstyle (If your child will not practice prior to November 1st or after March 31st then you can get the folkstyle only membership)
$45 - Full Membership (If your child will participate in the early practices before November or plans on participating in tournaments during the off season then the full membership is needed.)
